FACTS ABOUT AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK:

  • The park is the largest protected wetland in Africa, founded in 1934 to protect animals and plants.
  • It was named after the Akagera river which flows along its eastern boundary and feeds into Lake Ihema.
  • The park covers over 2500 square kilometer. In 1997, it was reduced in size because most of the land was reallocated to refugees returning to Rwanda. The conserved area was harmed by poaching and cultivation.
