Do you know about the Uganda Mangabey?
Lophocebus-ugandae, Uganda–primates Uganda Mangabey scientifically known as Lophocebus ugandae can only be seen in just one country on the entire planet and that is Uganda. it s said to be a descendant of the old-world monkey. these can be seen on our Uganda Primate Safari .Previously it was assumed to belong to the grey-cheeked mangabey, however, Colin Gloves a renowned taxonomist began the update of Uganda’s segment to new Species and it was named Lophocebus ugandae (L. Ugandae).
Professor Colins was able realize that this was a distinct species when he found that the Uganda Mangabeys is smaller in size compared to the renowned grey cheeked mangabey and in addition it has a somewhat smaller face on a smaller-shorter skull. So for all holiday makers planning to visit n a Safari in Uganda, besides the 19 different primate species found within the country, today you can see these unique Uganda Mangabeys in Mabira forest found just 60 kilometers from the capital city Kampala along the Kampala – Jinja man road.
In his research which was made and authenticated officially on 16th February, Groves mentioned that when he modified his research that he conducted 30 years ago, it was discovered that he L. ugandae are smaller in comparison with their colleagues found in other countries across the world. According to his report, he suggested that this Species needs to be given extra attention with regards to conservation and better be included on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) list of endangered species and this would offer them better consideration just as it is with the mountain gorillas and Chimpanzees.
Where to See the Uganda Mangabey
On the other hand, the grey cheeked mangabeys are widely spread and can be seen in different parts of the world including the Congo-forests all the way to northern Angola.
Within Uganda, these grey-checked mangabeys can be seen in Mabira forest, Itwara, Bugoma, Sango bay, Semliki, Bujuko, Kibale as well as Mpanga. However their largest population is dwelling in the mabira forest and can easily be seen during the different forest walks.
Diet of the Uganda Mangabey
They mainly feed on fruits and prefer staying in the inner most areas of the forest dwelling in the upper forest canopy. This has limited them from destroying the crops in the farmlands surrounding these areas.
